Giving is the first practicing stage of Six Paramitas. Giving is one of the ways for beings to be on the path of getting enlightened. Giving is also the way of accumulating the “benefits” within the short period of time in life. In the beginning of 2009, the principal of Taiwan Kagyu Buddhist Institute started the first time Rice Giving project during the 26th Kagyu Monlam in Bodhgaya, India. There were about one thousand five hundred kilograms of rice given to the local poor people. Thousands of poor people received the rice with smiles on their faces. His Holiness Kalu Rinpoche also acclaimed and supported the project by blessing the people who were lining up for receiving the rice, and all the participated people were reciting “OM MA NI PADME HUNG” all together during the event.
Taiwan Kagyu Buddhist Institute has been continuing this Rice Giving project in Taiwan. This project will be ended on December 31, 2009. All the donated funds will be used to purchase rice to give to the poor people in Bodhgaya again. If there would be any excessive rice left from the project, they will be offering to all the Buddhist temples in Bodhgaya to achieve the “no-differentiation” offering.
